The website is hoppin!

October 30, 2007 · Comments Off

Hey guys,

So good to see the web site being used and as a tool for increased fellowship for us!  Nice work Glenn!  We just got back in town from a great visit with family in Mississippi that we hadnt seen in a long time, and sorry we missed out on the fun Sunday.  How did that go by the way?

I am encouraged to see the fellowship ideas and activities, its exciting to see deepening friendships and relationships.  Friday sounds fun, we should be able to make it at least for the hanging out and first part of the movie.  Keep us updated on what is going on with your lives!

Also, please dont let me forget a thank you note for the Rector class that hosted us Sunday for the fellowship!

Drive-In Movie and Fellowship!

October 29, 2007 · Comments Off

Hello Friends,

I just wanted to go ahead an confirm that we will be having a drive-in movie night THIS Friday night, November 2, 2007 @ 7:oo PM. Everyone who has shown interest is saying that Friday night is best instead of Saturday night. Please go ahead and mark your calendars for this Friday, unless of course you already have unchangeable plans. ;-)

This week is actually the LAST week for movies at the drive-in for the year of 2007, since the cold weather is setting in people will not come that much any more.

Nevertheless, I’m very happy to announce that the first movie for this week is the brand new animated movie, “The Ten Commandments“.

the ten commandments

The second movie is not as desirable, but for everyone who would like to stay and watch it… you only pay $5 for the whole night whether you watch one or two movies. By the way, the first movie starts at 8:00 PM if you cannot be there at 7:00 PM to play games and fellowship with each other.

I certainly hope that as many of you that can will be there at the movies when the gates open at 7 PM… This will ensure that we will have good seats, plus we will also be able to play Football or Frisbee or some other fun game in the large fields while we wait for the movie to start. [Please NOTE: Everyone who has a football or frisbee or something else, bring it with you to the drive-in!] They also have plenty of food on sale for VERY reasonable prices. But know this… You MUST bring CASH! They do not accept any form of plastic credit/debit cards or checks.

If I recall, you can get something substantial to eat for around 5 or 6 dollars… if you do not choose to eat before you come. Unfortunately, because some people brought their own grill and started selling their own food at the drive-in before and during the movies one time this year, no one is allowed to bring their own food into the establishment any more.

Please visit the theater web site for directions and any other information you might like to know. Here is the link: Wilderness Theater

Let me know if you have any questions! Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Peru

October 29, 2007 · 1 Comment

As some of you may or may not know, our missions committee is in serious discussion and prayer about our church adopting an unreached people group in Peru. This is something the pastors at Concord are pretty excited about, but the truth is that this will be a Herculian task that will require sacrifice, prayer and energy from every church member on some level. This Spring we will be sending a pre-visit vision team to gather information about a particular people group. This team is going with the intention of committing long-term to this region, Lord willing.

If God leads us in this direction one thing we would like to see happen is to send a team of college students and/or young adults to Peru for 8-10 weeks this summer to minister in the region we are considering adopting. Right now details are sketchy but the team would basically: (1) gather information; (2) build relationships; (3) do hands-on ministry to physical and emotional needs; (4) prayer walk; (5) encourage and support a local baptistic church in the region.

You wouldn’t have to speak Spanish (though this would be a plus). We are considering a team of 3-5 people. I’m asking each of you to begin praying. You would be the face of Concord for the unreached people’s of Peru for 2 months. Sounds like an exciting opportunity, don’t you think?

Trinity and Reality

October 25, 2007 · 1 Comment

Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to pass along some articles about the doctrine of the Trinity. Over the years I have come to be very cautious about how I try to explain the doctrine simply because the doctrine defies explanation in many ways. All too often the analogies that most people offer result in heresy once they are taken to their ultimate conclusions.

Take the “water can be ice, liquid, vapor” analogy. This one says that God’s trinitarian existence of Father, Son, and Spirit is like ice, water, and vapor. Unfortunately, when one pushes this analogy to the end it results in the heresy of Modalism, which teaches that God reveals Himself in different modes (Father, Son, or Holy Spirit) at different points in history. In other words, God is both one in PERSON and one in BEING.

Given this definition we can now see that the water analogy results in Modalism because the substance of water cannot be ice, liquid, and vapor at the same time. Water has three different MODES of ice, liquid, and vapor…

But the orthodox and Biblical doctrine of the Trinity says that God is one God, yet he exists as three distinct, indwelling persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Let me put it to you this way… if we are going to take the Biblical doctrine seriously and affirm what Scriptures teaches, we must ultimately realize that all physical/material analogies to the doctrine of the Trinity fail in some way or another. This means that we must uphold the simplest form of the doctrine (one God, three Persons) with all the mystery that accompanies it.

Okay, enough of my advice. I know that I promised articles, so here they are:

The Athanasian Creed

The Nature of God – The Tri-Unity of God

Trinitarian Analogies by John Frame

History Behind of the Creed

Athanasius: Select Works and Letters

The first article above simply contains the historic, orthodox creed that all Christians everywhere have confessed at some point or another since after the time of the Arian controversy. The “history behind the creed” article deals with the Arian controversy and background to why the creed needed to be written in the first place by Athanasius. Second, “the nature of God” article was written by Dr. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries. It includes a clear, Biblical defense of the doctrine and much more. Third, and very helpful, is an article by Dr. John Frame of Reformed Theological Seminary on how we should approach the issue of giving analogies for the doctrine of the Trinity. This one should definitely be read.

Also, I’ve provided a general link to the life and works of Athanasius for anyone who wants to know more about him and what he did during his lifetime. Athanasius is a true blessing from God to the entire Church!

Please note that there is a distinction between the Eastern Christian churches and the Western Christian churches. The Eastern churches tended to approach God from the emphasis of three persons and then sought to show their unity. The Western churches have historically emphasized God’s unity and sought to show the diversity within the Godhead. I do not believe that either approach leads to heresy, but it is important to know that over one thousand years ago the East and the West thought that the other’s approach did lead to heresy. Here is what Dr. Frame says in a footnote:

The westerners, saying that God had “one substance (substantia), three persons (personae), (originally “masks”) sounded Sabellian to the easterners, who said God had “one being (ousia)” and “three substances (hypostaseis).” And the easterners sounded tritheistic or Arian to the westerners.

Last, but not least, here is a suggested reading list for anyone interested in reading a book or two on the doctrine… (more…)

Randomness

October 22, 2007 · Comments Off

Devin — Awesome job Sunday night.  Thanks for bringing the Word to us, God really spoke through you.  Your life is a testimony to what you preached!  So when is your Sunday morning message coming?

Everyone, dont forget about the Sunday fellowship meal at the Smith’s house.  They will give directions after church Sunday.  They have a lot in store, it should be a great afternoon.  Of course, I will be out of town.  We had planned a long time ago to go to Mississippi to visit family.  I am sorry about this, we will really miss not being there.   We will be praying for a great time of fellowship.

Speaking of prayer, Will prayed Sunday for rain!  Thank God for bringing it.  Lets not forget to look for and remember to see God’s goodness in answered prayer!  Sometimes we pray, and then move on without thanking God for hearing us and answering.  Praise God for this answer!

If you have been praying about something, dont give up!  God is working something in you far greater than you can imagine.  (Luke 18:1-8)  Everyone, have a great week.  Keep in touch and let us know what is going on in your life!

More Corn Maze…

October 20, 2007 · 2 Comments

So sorry for the lack of details about our trip on Saturday. I think it would probably be easier to meet near the bottom of Lookout Mountain since that’s close to the maze…I’m not sure where, but Mr. T’s is a pretty central location. If anyone has my cell phone number, just give me a call if you have questions. Oh, and let’s meet at 6:30 or so. Hope to see more than a couple of people there!

Ministry Opportunity

October 18, 2007 · Comments Off

I’ve been given an opportunity to complete a clinical rotation in Grand Junction, Colorado for eight weeks starting January 7. However, there is no one to fill my drama teaching position with the elementary school kids on Wednesday nights and I don’t want to leave anyone high and dry. If you think you might be interested in helping me out and planting seeds of the Gospel in the hearts of our church’s kids, then please let me know and you can come see how much fun, and what a great ministry, drama can be.

Corn Maze!!!

October 18, 2007 · 3 Comments

Hi everybody! So, we are attempting a get together this Saturday night (the 20th) to go to the Enchanted Corn Maze at the bottom of Lookout. They have a couple options (scary, not scary) and they have live music and storytelling around a bonfire. The cost is $8.50 per person unless I know how many are going and then we can get a group discount of….I’m not sure, but cheaper. We’d probably want to meet at 6 or 6:30. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll set it up!

Thanks Lisa for getting things going.  I wonder if everyone is getting these e-mails?  Great post Glenn and very applicable to what we are studying in 1st Corinthians.  Lisa, we are praying for you and your big decisions/possibilities coming up!
